Celtic v City: 13 connections

There are numerous connections between Celtic and City - here are 13 of the more recent ones...

Mick McCarthy

Powerful central defender McCarthy spent four years as City skipper before moving on and eventually joining Celtic in 1987. Arguably Mick is better remembered by fans north of the border after winning three trophies in two seasons, though he served both with equal commitment.

Eyal Berkovic

The magical talents of Israeli play maker Berkovic graced both City and Celtic. He headed to Parkhead after an infamous training ground spat with West Ham team-mate John Hartson. He enjoyed a two-year spell with Celtic before being left out of the team by new manager Martin O’Neill. After a loan spell with Blackburn, he joined City for a bargain £1.5m where he reminded everyone what a superb player he was. A firm favourite at Maine Road he enjoyed two excellent seasons with the Blues before falling out with Kevin Keegan and joining Portsmouth.

Jason Denayer

Denayer spent a season on loan at Parkhead and made a huge impression during his year in Scotland. Voted Celtic Young Player of the Year and SFA Young Player of the Year it's fair to say the move worked out well for all parties though the Belgian turned down the chance to spend a second season on loan with the Hoops..

Scott Sinclair

Though Sinclair struggled to establish himself with City playing just 19 times in three years, he's made an instant impact with Celtic scoring six goals in just 10 games following 18 mixed months at Aston Villa.

GREAT SCOTT: Scott Sinclair has started well at Celtic Park

Kolo Toure

Ivory Coast defender Kolo Toure spent four seasons with City playing a major part in the Blues’ revival which included a Premier League title and the FA Cup before eventually moving down the pecking order and moving on to Liverpool in 2013. Now in his first season with Celtic, the popular centre half is sure of a warm reception whenever he returns to the Etihad.

Georgios Samaras

Greek striker Samaras never lived up to the potential he’d shown with Dutch side Heerenveen that had convinced the Blues to shell out £6.5m. He arrived at City in 2006 and spent just two years at the Etihad, scoring just 12 goals in 64 appearances before moving on to Celtic where he had seven very productive years, scoring 74 goals in 249 games. After brief spell with West Bromwich Albion he headed to first the UAE, then the USA where he currently plays for Rayo Oklahoma.

GREECE IS THE WORD: Georgios Samaras

Craig Bellamy

Fiery Welsh international Craig Bellamy was loaned to Celtic from Newcastle after a fall out with manager Graeme Sourness and proved a popular figure during his short spell with the Hoops. After spells with Blackburn, Liverpool and West Ham, he joined City in 2008 and proved to be a big crowd favourite during his time with the Blues, scoring 15 goals in 51 appearances before being loaned to Cardiff City and later re-joining Liverpool.

CRAIG BELLAMY: Thumbs up from City fans

Neil Lennon

Lennon never had an opportunity to establish himself at City after being with the Club's youth and reserve ranks for several years and made just one appearance. He did, however, enjoy success at Leicester City and later as both a player and manager at Parkhead during an association that lasted a total of 11 years. He won 11 trophies as a player and a further five as manager.

Dedryck Boyata

Belgian defender Boyata was a product of the City Academy system but was never more than a fringe player during his six years with the Blues. He clocked up a total of 33 appearances for City and had loan spells with FC Twente and Bolton before making a permanent move to Celtic in 2015 where he was a first-team regular during his first season.

Patrick Roberts

Talented City winger Patrick Roberts was loaned to Celtic for 18 months in January 2016 and quickly became a crowd favourite at Parkhead. The talented winger scored six goals in 13 appearances towards the end of the 2015/16 season and is available to play against the Blues on Wednesday evening.

ROBERTS IN ACTION: Away to Sunderland....

John Guidetti

With just one appearance in six years, John Guidetti was forced to spend time on loan elsewhere to prove his potential. The young Swede spent time with Feyenoord, Burnley, Stoke and Celtic, joining the latter in 2014/15 for the season. With 15 goals in 35 starts, Guidetti earned a permanent move to Celta Vigo in 2015

Gerry Creaney

Creaney had spent seven years with Celtic before moving south to Portsmouth in 1994 where he would spend a season. He was swapped with the popular Paul Walsh in 1995 but his return of just four goals in 21 appearances saw him loaned out to a succession of lower league clubs prior to a permanent move to St Mirren in 1998.

Billy McNeill

A Celtic legend as both player and manager, Billy McNeill gave 27 years of his life to the Glasgow giants winning 31 trophies along the way. He left Celtic to become City boss in 1983 and guided the Blues to promotion in 1985, staying for one season in the top flight before quitting his post at Maine Road for Aston Villa. He later returned to Celtic where he is, quite rightly, regarded as a club legend.
