Steph Houghton pens new deal with Man City Women

Steph Houghton has agreed a new contract with Manchester City Women.

The City and England skipper has committed her future to the Club and will lead MCWFC’s title defence later this year after a stunning domestic sweep during the past 12 months.

Houghton, capped 70 times by the Lionesses, joined City in 2014 as the Blues took their place in the new first tier of the Women’s Super League.

The former Sunderland, Leeds United and Arsenal centre-half signed along with Jill Scott and Karen Bardsley as the relaunched side took shape.

She skippered the side to the WSL runners-up spot in her first campaign while lifting the Continental Cup – the Blues’ first major silverware.

Houghton led City to a first WSL 1 title in 2016, adding another Continental Cup triumph and a first FA Women’s Cup last month.

City also reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2017, losing out to eventual champions Lyon over two legs.

Though City finished runners-up in the recent Spring Series, Houghton will hope to add yet more winners’ medals when the WSL 1 resumes later this year.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have agreed a new deal,” said Houghton. “I’ve only ever seen my future at the club.

“This will be my fourth season and I’ve loved every single minute of it. I had no intention of going anywhere else and this is my home now.

“There is a passion at this club for both the men’s and the women’s teams and we’re all together and it feels like one like a family.

“Ever since the first moment I arrived, I’ve been made to feel welcome here and now I just want to help us to win more trophies for our amazing fans who follow us everywhere.”
